The central theme is about fringe characters -- outsiders -- living in a grimy, seedy world ruled over by huge, all-encompassing megacorporations. So I decided to do my own research to see how far off the mark Parrinder's article is when it comes to more recent science fiction. Lobsters - then then the rest of Accelerando blew me away when I read it, and I would have been reading SF for around 25 years then. They are places of motion, change, and opportunity that are exciting and deadly at the same time - the bigger and faster the better for plot twists and vivid action. Cthulhu Tech is very much a post-cyberpunk setting, and despite the nature of the universe, has a government that despite its flaws is trying to save humanity, an economy which is approaching post-scarcity with nanofactories and the D-Engine, and themes of transhumanism (though not of the kind that you necessarily like ).

While "size does matter", a famous tagline of the movie Godzilla, incredibly small robots, called nanobots, do matter as well (e.g. Is scientific expertise the basis of authority? No Hats Beyond This Point came out in 2003, a whole twelve years after the disappointing rock album Sideways. 1989's Adventures Of Men & Women was equally lacking. It covered cyberpunk topics such as virtual reality and smart drugs. The style evokes a sense of fear and paranoia while overloading the reader with information.
