Term used to describe a school of sf writing that developed and became popular during the 1980s. What many of these works captured was more the style than the substance of cyberpunk. Jaffe, Harold (1988) “Max Headroom” in Mississippi Review 47/48 (1988), pp.130-135. They have enormous financial and political power, but no creative power whatsoever. Cyberpunk has influenced many anime and manga including Appleseed, where the focus is on the urban cyberpunk conflict in a post-World War III environment.

The generic title became, by more or less popular demand, speculative fiction, there after referred to as sf. That doesn’t sound like not being in the field to me ???? True for the hard scifi of the 50’s and early 60’s but most sci-fi, from the 19th century inception (which we would call steamppunk today, ironically enough) and the pulp sci-fi of the 20-40s, not to mention TV sci-fi, movies and comic books were (and are) more based on a passing knowledge of the science/tech going with whatever is “hot” at the moment.

The object was badly cracked when it was being moved early in its history, and the lines of the shards have become a familiar part of the work of art.
