The word derives from the Old English word Godspell, or “good news.” It is a translation of the Greek word evangelion. This swift decision can be credited to a chance event in his life. The obviously surprised reporter then quipped: We should all pray for our Anglican brethren. It originates in the Greek word euangelion, meaning “the good news,” or, more commonly, the “gospel.” During the Reformation, Martin Luther adapted the Latinized form of the term evangelium, dubbing his breakaway movement the evangelische kirche, or “evangelical church”—a name still generally applied to the Lutheran Church in Germany.

The Italians of he renaissance are in some respects innocents, Christianity was certainly a presence. In May, 1526, a great religious disputation was held at Baden, the Catholics being represented by Eck, Johann Faber, and Murner, and the Reformed by Œcolampadius and Berthold Haller. Reinventing the class meeting ties in nicely with the discipling/mentoring emphasis above. This sacramental perspective helped to integrate the natural and the contractual dimensions of marriage and to render marriage a central concern of the church.
